NZ travels part 2

And here is part two of our crazy December-January travel extravaganza! More of the same, only post-Christmas food and boozefest. Excellent…and hyperlinks to more detailed posts hopefully coming soon!

January 3rd – Auckland to Rotorua

High point: White water rafting down the world’s highest commercially rafted waterfall (7m)

Low point: The fact that it was not humanely possible to finish the 2 tonnes (approx) of delicious snapper caught and bbq’d for supper by my brother and his wife.

Water - check. White - check. No-one mentioned the brown...

Water – check. White – check. No-one mentioned the brown…

January 4th – Rotorua to Tongariro (via Taupo)

High point: Walk round Blue Lake

Low point: Saying goodbye to Dad who flew back to Auckland to go home

January 5th – Tongariro to Waitomo and back (Tongariro crossing rained off)

High point: Gloworms, glowmaggots…whatever you want to call them

Low point: First night apart from my little boy…ever! Sniff.

January 6th – Tongariro Crossing and drive back to Auckland

The three summits: Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and snow-capped Ruapehu

The three summits: Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and snow-capped Ruapehu

High point: Mount Tongariro summit 1967m – literally

Low point: Getting out of the car after a refreshing 4 hour post-hike drive. #Robotwalk

January 7th – Auckland to Queenstown

High point: Shotover Jet – perfectly timed to take place at that moment where it stopped raining and the sun came out

Low point: Unpacking and repacking the suitcase at 6.30am…AGAIN

Jetboating the Shotover River

January 8th – Milford Sound and back over Crown Range to Wanaka (via Cardrona)

High point: Watching seals sunbathing, then sliding into the water and lolling lazily on their backs, with their flippers in the air

Low point: Mother-in-law locking car keys in the boot at 7am. I’m not joking.

January 9th – Wanaka to Franz Josef glacier

High point: Paragliding above Wanaka and (sorry, I have to be allowed two high points today) driving the sublime Haast Pass in glorious sunshine

Low point: Phone charger cable dying. Buying a new one. Car charger adapator breaking. Buying a new one. New phone charger cable dying. Giving up on electronic goods forever….

January 10th – Franz Josef glacier

High point: Helicopter ride and snow landing in (yet again) bright sunshine. Weather gods, we don’t know what we did to please you, but we’re glad we did it…

Low point: Hurting from overindulgence after a record 3 meals out in one day. So much for the January regime.

January 11th – Franz Josef to Arthurs Pass via Hokitika and Punakaiki (Pancake Rocks)

High point: Leaving Franz Josef in crappy weather. No heli-hikes for anyone else #Schadenfreude.  Mwahaha.

Actual high point: Seeing my brother and his wife’s wonderful jade carvings made at Bonz ‘n Stonz in Hokitika. So proud (now I want to go back and do it!)

Low point: More sleeping arrangement jiggery-pokery involving the baby cot and a VERY late night for the poor little fella.

January 12th – Arthurs Pass to Christchurch and fly back to Auckland

High point: Driving Arthur’s Pass

Low point: Getting home to discover husband had ignored the courgette plant for a week. In my absence one fruit had grown to the length of my arm and the thickness of my (post-Christmas) thigh. With accurate aim, I’m fairly confident it could’ve been used as a murder weapon. In fact it very nearly was.

And, of course…the END OF THE TRIP. (sniff).
